Highclere Castle is located in Hampshire’s countryside, England. Since its construction, it has kept visitors spellbound by its historic past and beautiful architecture.

We had the privilege of visiting Highclere Castle in May. It is surreal how beautiful the building is, the stunning grounds, and the other surprising elements like the Egyptian exhibit in the cellars.

We were visiting the Cotswolds area of England which is a short one-hour drive from where we stayed and 45 minutes from Stonehenge.

If you are staying in London there are wonderful London to Highclere Castle tours for a great day trip. The recommended tours for Stonehenge and Highclere are here.

Highclere Estate achieved recognition for its central role in shooting the popular television series Downton Abbey while providing visitors a perspective on British aristocratic heritage from the past and present. The estate is an essential English stately home because its story began over a thousand years ago.

Highclere Castle History

Highclere Castle from afar

In 749 AD, an Anglo-Saxon king bestowed the land that would become Highclere Castle to the Bishops of Winchester when the foundations were established.

Bishop William of Wykeham built a medieval palace with gardens on the property in the late 14th century. Many ownership alterations followed the English Reformation before Sir Robert Sawyer purchased the estate in 1679 as the Attorney General to Charles II and James II.

The Herbert family descended from Sawyer, gained ownership of the estate after his death, and have been in continuous possession since they received their title as Earl of Carnarvon.

The castle has experienced multiple renovations, and each successive generation contributed to the estate’s transformations.

Architectural Evolution

Construction started in 1679 to build a mansion following classical patterns from that time. Sir Charles Barry presented the design plan to rebuild Highclere Castle between the years 1842 through 1849 based on instructions given by the 3rd Earl of Carnarvon.

Sir Charles Barry led the redesign of Highclere Castle by transforming it into Jacobethan style, which combined elements from Jacobean and Elizabethan architecture with Italianate components.

The building achieved a magnificent mansion status due to its ornate exterior designs, high spires, and detailed stonework, which represented Victorian luxury at its peak.

With more than 300 rooms within its structure, the castle showcases luxurious drawing rooms with a majestic library holding unique books and stately bedrooms that welcome aristocrats, politicians and dignitaries from royalty.

The Grounds and Gardens

Visiting Highclere Castle

While the Castle itself is stunning and magical, we loved the grounds and gardens of Highclere. I could not get over how green the grass was and how large the trees were. I could sit for hours and stare at the greenery. The grounds are so well-maintained and gorgeous.

The estate extends across 5,000 acres which launched into existence during the 18th century through the architectural vision of Capability Brown.

Through his vision, Brown redesigned the park to become a beautiful landscape with hills, calm water elements, and guided trees across the terrain.

Notable aspects of the gardens encompass:

  • The Lebanon Cedars – Several majestic tree specimens from the 18th-century seasoning extend majestic beauty across the estate property.
  • The Wildflower Meadows – The pollinator-friendly meadows attract visitors during the spring and summer through their picturesque yellow and blue blossoms.
  • The Secret Garden – This secluded segment is the ideal space to enjoy walking while expressing your thoughts.
  • The Monk’s Garden – The garden features expert gardening that blends exotic and native plants.
  • The Temple of Diana – One of the historic gardens features a building that offers visitors exceptional views across the entire estate domain.

The Carnarvon Family and the Egyptian Connection

Highclere Castle maintains an intriguing historical connection to ancient Egypt, one of its most fascinating narrative points. Archaeology recorded one of its most important discoveries due to the central role played by George Herbert, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon.

Together with archaeologist Howard Carter he financed the efforts of discovering King Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922.

The Egyptian Exhibition exhibits artifacts in the castle cells to remember this historical accomplishment. The exhibition includes:

  • Exhibited copies of items recovered from the burial site of King Tutankhamun.
  • Rare photographs from the original excavation.
  • Insights into the 5th Earl’s expeditions and passion for Egyptology.

Highclere Castle distinguishes itself from other British manor homes because of its unique connection between a great English house and the golden artifacts of Egyptian antiquity.

Highclere Castle in Popular Culture

Highclere Castle gained much popularity with the creation of the show “Downton Abbey.” One of my personal favorites, the show made me incredibly fascinated with England making it my first-ever trip out of the United States.

The success of Downton Abbey made Highclere Castle serve as the principal filming location for both the television series airing from 2010 through 2015 and the two resulting films which premiered in 2019 and 2022.

Highclere Castle displayed luxury through its beautiful architecture and high-end décor making it the ideal location for presenting British high society living during the 1900s to television audiences.

Several beloved rooms of Downton Abbey appear in the TV series, including:

  • The Drawing Room – People in the Crawley family used the Drawing Room for significant discussions that took place there.
  • The Library – Thousands of antique books line the walls that make up this particular space.
  • The Dining Room – A grand space for formal meals and events.
  • The Bedrooms and Corridors – The Bedrooms, the Corridors, contained iconic scenes that portrayed the private life of the Crawley family.

As a result of the success of Downton Abbey the visitation at Highclere Castle experienced a major increase as people traveled worldwide to experience Downton Abbey’s authentic setting.

You can even sit on the bench under the tree Lady Mary Crawley often does to contemplate.

Conservation and Preservation Efforts

Running a historic facility of such size as Highclere Castle requires sustained operational challenges. Hospitality revenue generated by tourism specifically after the Downton Abbey success enables necessary preservation projects. These efforts include:

  • The conservation work includes repairs to deteriorating stonework and roofing materials.
  • Preservation of antique furniture and artwork.
  • Protection of the expansive gardens together with the woodlands.
