I live in Fort Worth, which means I have spent a suspicious amount of time driving forty-five minutes in any direction to look at an old courthouse and buy a fridge magnet I did not need 🙂 The thing nobody tells you about North Texas is that some of the prettiest small towns in the state are a short hop from the city — close enough to leave after a slow morning coffee and still be home for dinner.
These are the eight prettiest small towns near Fort Worth I send people to first.
All within about ninety minutes of Fort Worth, all walkable, all worth the drive.

1. Granbury
About 45 minutes southwest
Granbury is the one I’d send a first-timer to, because it does the small-town thing better than towns ten times its size. The historic square was the first downtown square in Texas to land on the National Register, and it has earned the bragging rights — the 1890s Hood County Courthouse sits dead center, ringed by more than forty boutiques, antique shops, and restaurants, plus an 1886 opera house that still stages live productions.
Then there’s the water. Lake Granbury runs right up to the edge of town, so you can browse the square in the morning, grab fudge from one of the candy shops, and be on a beach by afternoon. USA Today named it the best historic small town in the country a few years back, and for once, the internet was right.
2. Waxahachie
About an hour southeast
Waxahachie (say “walks-uh-hatchie,” and yes, you’ll get it wrong the first time) is the architecture town. The streets are lined with storybook Victorian homes — gingerbread trim, wraparound porches, the works — and the gothic-style Ellis County Courthouse looks like it was airlifted in from a European capital.
It’s also officially the “Crape Myrtle Capital of Texas,” which means that when the trees bloom in summer, the whole town goes faintly pink. Time your visit for the famous Scarborough Renaissance Festival if you want turkey legs and jousting knights with your charm.
3. Weatherford
About 30 minutes west
The closest one on this list, and the easiest sell when you only have a half day. Weatherford is the “Peach Capital of Texas,” so summer here smells like cobbler and the roadside stands are doing real business. The historic square is compact and genuinely pretty, anchored by the Parker County Courthouse.
4. Grapevine
About 30 minutes northeast
Grapevine Texas is our neighbor, so we often frequent it, and it is our family’s go-to for Christmas.

It’s the most family-friendly pick here: kids get the train and Great Wolf Lodge, you get a wine flight on a patio. Everybody wins.
Grapevine sits right between Dallas and Fort Worth, which makes it the quickest small town option — and it punches well above its size. Historic Main Street is lined with tasting rooms (the town leans hard into its wine identity, and it works), boutiques, and a vintage steam railroad you can actually ride.

5. Glen Rose
About an hour and 15 minutes southwest
Glen Rose is where you go when “pretty town square” isn’t quite enough and you’d also like to walk in 113-million-year-old dinosaur footprints. Dinosaur Valley State Park has real tracks pressed into the riverbed — you wade out and put your hand in them, and it is exactly as surreal as it sounds.
Just up the road, Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is a drive-through safari where a giraffe may genuinely lean into your car window looking for snacks. The little downtown is sweet and walkable, but let’s be honest, you came for the dinosaurs and the giraffes. So did I.
6. Decatur
About 40 minutes northwest
Decatur is the quiet one. We head to Decatur for some peace, literally. I am also planning to purchase land and move to Decatur in the next couple of years.
The Wise County Courthouse is one of the most striking in the state, a pink-granite landmark you can see from the highway, and the square around it stays calm except when the Main Street program throws one of its seasonal events (the Decatur wine-and-food walk is a good excuse to go).

7. Denton
About 45 minutes north
One of our closest neighbors, Denton, is the artsy college town that refuses to be boring. The downtown square wraps around the Denton County Courthouse — a genuinely beautiful 1890s building — and the streets around it are full of really fantastic restaurants, murals, record shops, indie coffee, and live music spilling out of doorways most nights.
It’s less “Hallmark movie” and more “creative, a little weird, very fun.” Come for the square, stay for whoever’s playing.
8. Historic Hico Texas
About 90 minutes southwest
Hico (rhymes with “high-co”) is the tiny one, the reward at the far end of the drive. It’s a one-stoplight kind of town built almost entirely on charm: a short historic main street, a few good antique shops, and — the real reason to go — some of the best pie and chocolate in North Texas. Wiseman House Chocolates and a slow afternoon are the entire itinerary, and that’s the point.
Pair it with Glen Rose since they’re in the same direction, and you’ve got a full, gorgeous day.
